Questions on Dressing Modest..Does It Differ Based on Culture or Activity?

My sister said that if you know your values and since guys are going to look anyways it doesn’t really matter. And is showing your legs bad? And, I tell her alot that she shouldn’t care so much about how she looks but she gets angry at me and says it makes her want to do the opposite of what I’m saying because I say it so much. I know I should pray but what else? People don’t seem to change for a long time.

Trophy of Grace replies…

Sweet sister,

My advice to you is to continue to pray for your sister. She may not receive from you at this moment. Trust that the Lord will bring someone into her life to minister the truth. Don’t frustrate yourself. Pray. Cast your care on the Lord because He cares about you and her.

I like what His Precious Gift said in this posting,

“The way we dress is a indication of our character and spiritual maturity, we have a responsibility not to expose areas of the body that normally draw attention from the opposite sex. We must realize that our behavior sets the tone for how others see us and our faith. Being modest in our appearance is just as great a witness to those around us as our actions and words. Our attire is an important part of our testimony. Sometimes we let people pressure us in doing what we believe is not the right thing to do, so we need to ask our self, are we being people pressured or Spirit-led?”

As we grow in our faith and in our spiritual maturity modesty becomes a way of life. It will reflect in the way we dress, talk, act, react, habits, etc. Our desire will not be to draw attention to ourselves but to draw others to Christ. When we carry ourselves like godly women who take pride in the way we dress others will see and they will know that we are different from the worldy women.

To answer your question, ‘Is showing your legs bad?’ No. There is nothing wrong with wearing a dress or shorts that show your legs. The question is how much should we be showing? If you can’t bend down because you’ll be showing everything or your booty cheeks are coming out well that’s not being modest. If when you are going up a flight of stairs and the person behind you can see right up your skirt, that’s an indication that your skirt is too short. If our skirt rides up too high and our blouses are so low cut that our breast are popping out we are bound to attractive lustful eyes and most assuredly cause others to stumble.

Here are some definitions of modest

• Having or proceeding from a disinclination to call attention to oneself.
• Free from showiness or ostentation; unpretentious
• Moderate or limited in size, quantity, or range; not extreme
• Not to put one’s self forward, not brash or bold but quiet, and not wanting to attract attention to one’s self.

Now there are some who like your sister who will say guys are going to look anyways and you can’t stop other people from lusting. This is so true, but we are each responsible for our own actions. We are not supposed to only look out for our own interests, but take an interest in others too. (Philippians 2:4)

We can dress modest and still look pretty and fashionable. We just may need to put a tank top under those low cut shirts or dresses. Consider wearing cute tights under those skirts or dresses that look more like long shirts but the world has labeled a dress.

As the years have gone by and as I have drawn closer to the Lord I have felt uncomfortable with some of my old clothes. I began to consider how my booty shorts, mini skirts, and even my bathing suit were so revealing. Why did I always have to be so sexy? Who are we trying to attract and why? Do all eyes always have to be on us? Really the way I was dressing did not make me look any different than the party girl or hoochie mama. Yeah sure I was different on the inside. I knew my values and where my heart was, but I began to want to look different. I began to want to reflect the holiness and purity I knew was now living in me. I didn’t want to continue to look and act like the rest of the world.

Young girl near wardrobeNow don’t get me wrong..I like to look good. I like to look pretty. I take pride in the way I look. I wear make-up, jewelry, heels, skirts, and shorts. I like fashion, but not at the expense of compromising modesty. I have learned not to be so extreme or out there. Now when I get dress I often times will stand in the closet and say, “Lord what should I wear”. I believe that the Holy Spirit helps me even with picking out my clothes. There are many people that think that the Lord doesn’t care about these things, but I think they’re wrong. My Lord has said pray about all things. (Philippians 4:6, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Ephesians 6:18) So I do. I talk to Him about everything. Even about what I should wear.

Sister dare to be different. Don’t worry about what other people think or what they are doing. If we are going to be Christ servants we need to care about what He thinks. (Galatians 6:10) We need to do what we know is right and live as representatives of Christ Jesus. Allow the Holy Spirit to be your guide.

Don’t stress out about these things. Let the Lord continue the good work that He has started in your life. He will show through His Spirit what to wear and how to represent Him. Leave your sister in His hands. He deals with each of us right where we’re at. Don’t hound her about being more modest. Instead let the way you live be a testimoy to her.

Sincerely,

Trophy of Grace
