At My Church Events We Aren’t Allowed To Wear Tank Tops

I just read the post about modesty- I still have one question. At my church events we aren’t allowed to wear tank tops. I have many tanks that cover my breasts completely, have wide straps, and are long enough that I can bend over or raise my arms without revealing my midriff, and are not tight on my body. I understand modesty to avoid tempting boys, but I’ve never heard of shoulders inspiring lust, and my shoulders are the only things revealed by a tank top that would be hidden by a t-shirt. It’s not that I have a problem complying with my church’s dress code, I just honestly don’t understand why I’m not permitted to wear a non-revealing tank top while the boys run around shirtless.

My other question is if/why it’s ok for them to do that- if the leaders think shirtless boys don’t inspire lust in young women, they’re wrong. Thanks

Honestly I don’t know why your church has established these rules, but I must encourage you to continue to respectfully comply with their request as you have chosen to be under their leadership.

You have very valid concerns especially regarding the guys running around shirtless at church activities. Perhaps the tank top rule was made because of other young ladies who wore inappropriate tanks tops in the past. Now to avoid inappropriate tanks being worn they just choose to rule them out completely. I am sure they have their reasons.

If you do not understand why and want to know, then I would ask them directly and perhaps they can give an explanation. Address your concerns directly with them. This is my best advice. Whenever you have a concern that you feel you need understanding or clarification on then pray about it and if you feel lead and released by God to inquire then go directly to the source respectfully.

Romans 13:1 “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.”

1 Timothy 2:1-3 “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior,”

Sincerely,

Trophy of Grace
