Why Are You So Afraid To Do Anything With Your Gift of Singing and Songwriting?
Anonymous writes…
Hi, again. Sorry to bother you. I just was reading the part in Matthew where Jesus talks about the people who get talents and invest them and the one who barries theirs and then gets called out on it later. I know talents meant $ back then, but I’m guessing it was symbolic about more than just money. It kinda freaked me out. Cause I’ve got a gift I’m kinda barrying. I’m a singer songwriter. And it’s kindof a secret. It’s something that I’m (not to be proud) but actually really good at. But, I’m scared to do anything with it. I’m usually fine with crowds. Public speaking, acting…easy. But, singing songs I’ve written just seems to personal. God’s been, through a lot of stuff lately, laying into me about sharing my music. But, and I know this is really childish, I’m scared to death. What should I do?
Precious In His Sight replies…
Hi Kaylie, I’m Precious In His Sight responding to your question on behalf of Heart of Worship. I first of all would like to tell you thank you for writing in to our website to get clarity on your feelings.
The versus of scripture that you were reading is Matthew 25:14-30. In Matthew 25:25 it says; ‘And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’
Can I share something with you……
I too have a talent that I sat on for years, not really knowing what I was able to do it. My talent is writing, and I am actually a Self-Published Author. It took me a while to actually get the nerve to put together my writings in a manuscript form and then it took a dose of confidence to send it off to a Publishing company.
May I ask you this question, why are you so afraid to do anything with your gift of singing and song writing?
Is it because you feel as though people won’t receive what you have to give?
Do you realize that our gifts are not of our own, but they come from God Almighty?
God created a plan for each one of His children using those gifts and His intention was for us to carry out that plan, so that those gifts would be a blessing to us but mostly to others. For I know that plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Do you know how many lives you can impact from the positive words that you can write and sing about in a song. I know that when I am feeling down and out and I tune into my favorite Christian radio station or I slip on one of my favorite Christian CD’s, my demeanor changes because of the words that are being given to me in those songs. I applaud singers and song writers because what they are doing is changing the world through music. They are bring light and life to a dark and dead situation.
This can be you if you would only remove the light of your gift from underneath that rock and place it on a table and let it shine for all to see.
Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:15-16)
Sister, you say that God has been on you a lot lately about sharing your music. Maybe He has someone in particular that He wants you to share. A song with that sister that may be going through a hard time right now and your words would lift her person up.
My suggestion to you is to seek God in prayer with everything. In you asking Him to show you what He wants you to do with this talent that He has given to you. God promises us that if we seek Him, we will find Him and He will listen to our prayers and bring us to the place that He wants us to be and take us out of our captive hearts. “Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord and I will bring you back from your captivity”. (Jeremiah 29:12-14)
Your gift has power and it is given that power by God Almighty to change this world. I knew my gift of writing had power because I would first pray and then write out encouraging words and share it with my friends that had come to me with their issues. They were truly blessed by the words that the Holy Spirit had laid on my heart just for them.
Please know that you are blessed with such a precious gift and just as Matthew 25 talks about the servants being given the different amount of talents, don’t be that one that digs the hole to hide the talent. You be the one to take that talent and share it with the world so that it would reproduce and manifest itself into the hearts of God’s people just as He intended for it to do.
Remember that the enemy has many ways to slip you off of the path that God has carved out for you, and he is trying to win you over with low self esteem and fear. But you can and WILL rise up above the enemy! Know that whatever he has up his sleeve, God will take it and turn it around for His perfect purpose.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
I want you to listen to the words of this song by Jesus Culture; “Your Love Never Fails”

Your welcome
thank you so much! I really appreciate! I\’m going to pray and see if this is what God wants me to do. God bless!!!
Emily,
I agree with Precious in His Sight and love Jesus Culture’s song, His Love Never Fails, too.
This is your heart’s desire to sing. It sounds like you need to pursue it. You should ask for those voice lessons and go for it. Pray and ask God to help you to not compare yourself to your sister, or anyone else. You may want to keep it to yourself for now regarding being a singer, and pray. A lot of times your family members are too close to have a clear view of your situation, and like you said you are still so young. If you have prayed about it and God has spoken to you to sing, then sing. Also, maybe you can join take Choir in school. Or, maybe you can join the choir at church and/or ask someone to work with you and help develop your voice?
There are many singer/song writers that may not have the “best” or “the most trained” voice who have gone on to being the most successful. Think of Bob Dylan, Bono of U2, Madonna? Their voices weren’t the most trained, but they had an “anointing” or the “heart”. Think of an athlete who may have all the talent in the world, but if they don’t have the “heart” they won’t succeed in the long run. I would rather listen to someone singing from their heart any day. I listen to all kinds of different music, but mostly I’m listening for the “story” that they are telling, and I’m listening to their heart. I’m sure that you have heard the saying, “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”; it’s true. There is beauty in all things if you are looking and listening.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds (a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through ages which nothing under the sun but God alone can satisfy), yet so that men cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
Also, we are made in God’s image and likeness.
Genesis 1:27 So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him: male and female He created them.
And the word says that as we grow up, we are changing…..
Colossians 3:10 And have clothed yourselves with the new spiritual self, which is ever in the process of being renewed and remolded into fuller and more perfect knowledge, upon knowledge, after the image the likeness of Him Who created it. Also read the rest of Colossians 3. It’s encouraging.
1 John 3:2 Beloved, we are (even here and) now God’s children’ it is not yet disclosed (made clear) what we shall be (hereafter), but we know that when He comes and is manifested, we shall (as God’s children) resemble and be like Him for we shall see Him just as He is.
Then King David wrote this beautiful Psalm about how God formed us in our mother’s womb and that we were made intentional…..…..
Psalm 139:13-15 For You did form my inward parts; You did knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will confess and praise You, for you are fearful and wonderful and for the awful wonder of my birth! Wonderful are Your works and that my inner self knows right well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being formed in secret and intricately and curiously wrought (as if embroidered with various colors) in the depths of the earth (a region of darkness and mystery). Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days (of my life) were written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them. How precious and weighty also are Your thoughts to me O God! How vast is the sum of them!
Emily, as you can see I base all that I believe and all that I say to you from the Word of God. I really recommend that you also do the same. Read your bible. Find out who God says that you are. Find your identity in Christ. Then, you will not care to compare yourself with anyone.
Finally, when I was your age, my sister and I both sang and led worship together in a very small church and loved to worship. I wished that I had pursued it then, and taken lessons when I was your age, and not compared myself to others, like my sister.
I still love to sing and I am a true worshiper. But, if you have a song in your heart, then sing!!
God is worthy of our praise!
Blessings!!

i have a question ok so ever since I was a little girl I always dreamed of being a singer (i was a little more dramatic when I was little:) But my problem is that I can sing but I don\’t know, I guess I don\’t think my voice is very pretty. I don\’t know if this is a selfish desire or what. My sister likes singing and everybody things she has the great voice, but my grandmother was a former singer (she and her sisters almost got a record deal but her dad turned it down) and she says that I have talent and a good ear. She said that my sister was the one that was tone deaf, not to be mean, but she said that she was literally tone deaf. Only 2 people have ever said I was good at singing nobody else really said anything. I play violin and I\’m beggining to learn piano and I\’ve always said I played violin so it could sing for me because I don\’t have enough courage to actually ask for singing lessons. I was singing in my room one day and my sister told my other grandomther if she heard me and she said yes, and thats all my other grandmother said. And I asked my mom if I was a good singer and she was either busy or was just trying not to answer. I\’ve heard my voice before and it\’s not bad but it could use some work. I\’ve asked God if my voice could get better (that and I\’m 13 so my voice is still kind of icky) WHat do you think? Is this a selfish desire or an actual desire?
