I forwarded your question to Beloved by Him for her suggestions because she went to college for journalism and I knew that she would have good advice. So she says..

Hey–what a sweet girl. My encouragement to her would be to think about studying journalism/communications as well as English and possibly education. I would guess that one of the best places to get published would be a Christian magazine. She could contact a few and see what their publishing guidelines are. A few things you might want to stress to her are that it can be difficult to get a print job without a good education, so she needs to get a good degree. She may want to consider a Christian college, because I would think they have contacts with some of the Christian publishers out there. Also, because of the economy, journalism is becoming a tougher field, so she should pray about what else the Lord may want her to do in addition to her writing. If she is creative, then maybe she can think about becoming a teacher and fostering those talents in her students. That’s not to say that she shouldn’t be a writer. There are volunteer/freelance opportunities that will allow her to get published, but not paid. She could approach her local church (if they have a newsletter–or maybe she could start one) or community newspaper and ask if they use volunteer writers. There will also probably be internship opportunities for her in college. Long story short, if God gave her those talents, then He will provide opportunities for her to glorify Him with them.

Amen to her suggestions and especially that last sentence. Very good advice..

I would also suggest blogging. You can go to and start your own blog for free. Then you can share your literature with the world. You would be surprised what our Lord can do when you step out and faith and allow Him to use you. The possibilities are endless.

Pray and fast about the direction you are seeking for college and how the Lord would like you to start using this gift. He will give you clear direction. The gifts that He has given are to glorify Him so He will show you how to use them properly and where to start. All you need is a willingness to be used by Him and offer your gifts to His service and you will the favor of God on your life. He will begin to open doors and take you right where you need to be. So trust Him..

Here are some Scriptures to meditate on:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

“Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight.” Exodus 33:13

“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’
Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” Isaiah 30:21

“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9

“Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, for in You do I trust;
Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to You.” Psalm 143:8

    LOL!!!! Oh my!!! I truly truly hope that the young woman who wrote this post comes back to read this!!!!

    WOW, incredible I came across your story hahaha. I will try to make a long story short but basically I was in the SAAAME boat as you not to long ago!

    I mean EXACTLY!!!! I am sophmore in college now, I’m a poet, I had thoughts of being a writer, but didnt feel I could make a living in that. So I came to college and pursued a career in medicine for a year and a quarter thinking medicine=career=money, till I felt the Lord tugging on my heart. I began to feel like writing was the gift God gave me, and money shouldnt be my driving force for career decisions.

    But I was scared, had my mind set on medicine for so long I had anxiety about switching majors. I prayed HARD!!! Registration for my classes were coming up in a few days and I was so torn!

    Long story short, I went to my church as usual, afterwards I spoke with a youth leader, casually at first, but then he began to prophesy and looked at me and just said “Write, you need to write, its your gift”, of course I hadnt mentioned anything to him about my dilema, and for him to just bust that out blew me away, so basically to me that was my confirmation. I broke down in tears, and realized that God is so faithful,Psalms 37:25 “..yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread”, I realized God would bless me in whatever I did, espcially if I felt it was the gift He gave me.

    So I put fear aside, for the Lord doesnt give a sprit of fear, and obeyed what I felt He was putting on my heart. I changed majors and I’ve been soooo blessed ever since. I love to write poetry about Him, I share it with others, my gift of writing was kinda “lost” when I was doing science, I just didnt feel I could write as well anymore, but that gift came back like a flood after I changed my majors.

    I’ve never been happier, I love what I do, and to be honest, I have no idea what career I’m going to have with my English major…lol…awhile ago that scared me but, not anymore…cuz in my weakness His strength is made perfect and I truly just have to trust Him to be faithful in blessing me, and He truly has!!!

    Seems like you already know what your gift is, just ask Him what to do. My story is honest and sure proof that God hears and He answers, and if you have a feeling about something, its not for nothing.

    God bless you my sister in christ and in pen (^_^), I wish you the best and to be blessed in all you write!
