HELP!!! Iâve been on here quite a few times and under other names. Iâm in big trouble!!! I canât seem to stop doing sinfull things! I have an addiction to porn! I know Iâm wrong for doing it and I feel horrible when Iâm done. I keep telling myself I will change, but I keep going back. I need some serious help. I canât talk to my friends or family. I just need some help!!
Dear Scared & Praying,
You are SO NOT ALONE. Let me assure you of this. There are many Christians, men and women, who have addictions to porn. Follow these links and see for yourself how many others have come to us here on WeUsed2bu battling the same addiction and temptation overall.
I know this may sound strange, but you are in a great place right now. You may not know it, but you are. You see that you have a problem. You are not in denial, which means that God has opened your eyes to see this for what it is, sin. You know what else that means? It means our God is going to give you the strength and power through His Holy Spirit to overcome this. So rejoice!! (1 Peter 1:6, James 1:2)
Here are some Scriptures that came to my mind when I was writing that last paragraph. Please be sure to read them out loud. All bolding and emphasis is mine.
I have discovered this principle of life-that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love Godâs law with all of my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is:In my mind I really want to obey Godâs law, but because of my sinful nature I am slave to sin. (Romans 7:21-25)
You must go on to chapter 8. In fact read all of Romans chapters 6-8. I assure you if you will read and mediate on these chapters over and over again, you will get a break through.
You need to tell someone. You need accountability from someone you can trust, perhaps a pastor, or bible teacher, group leader, or counselor. You must be able to talk to someone about this. It helps to talk things out. Of course we are also always here for you, but I pray that God puts someone on your heart that you can talk to face to face.
Also donât be afraid to keep it real with God. Donât hide from him after you have committed this sin. Donât hide from him when youâre about to do it, or even thinking about it. Cry out to him. Tell him that you are thinking about it. Ask Him to give you strength and then take the way out that He puts on your mind. Get away from your computer or tv. Throw away any dvds or movies that you may have that shouldnât be in your collection. He always provides a way of escape from temptation, we just have to take it. This is what 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 says about this,
If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.
I suggest you go in a private room and get on your face before God. Surrender this problem at His feet and give it to Him to help you with. He already is or you wouldnât be here seeking godly counsel from us. Allow His grace to heal you and cover your sin. Allow His Holy Spirit to empower you to overcome this sin so that you are no longer a slave to it. (Romans 6:15-19)
Here are some other articles that I think will help you also:
Temptation Our Daily Battle
Here is also a category called âFighting Temptationâ that has many different articles that I think will really help you too.
What will truly help you overcome this is reading Godâs Word and other material that supports the truth of Godâs Word, much prayer and fasting, counseling, support groups, and most of all accepting Godâs grace. I pray that something I have said has encouraged your heart.
