Tormented By Fear

Hello…

I have a problem that I need some help with.

Lets start from the begining..

When I was 5 years old, I was innocently playing on a pile of large stones by my old house in Indiana in the summertime. I accidentally stepped on a stone with a yellow jacket nest under it and was chased by a huge swarm of them! My mom said I had screamed SO loud that the neighbors thought I got ran over by a car…she said I got stung like 5 or 6 times! 0_0

Ever since that traumatic experience, I have had a horrible phobia of wasps (and bees, hornets, ect.). Its pathetic because it seems that I am more afraid of them (in the moment of panic when one is there) than anything else! But I can’t help it…its become a natural reaction to freak out when one is in the same place that I am. If there is a wasp in my house, I will literally run away, shut my bedroom door, close the heater vent on my floor, and use a blanket to clog up the crack under my door. Even then, I still think things like “oh man, what if theres another way in it could get through!?” My dad has made fun of me many times, my mom and step-dad don’t understand it, and even my boyfriend thinks my fear is dumb even though he won’t say that in those words! I think its pointless too, but I have tried everything to convince/talk myself out of the fear in a situation. I have even told myself that God is with me and that he created wasps and will protect me but it only helps a little (its the only thing that seems to help).I feel SO terrible because what If God looks down on me for this too? I know I’m not supposed to fear anything over Him…and I don’t WANT to! I have prayed for him to give me strength to overcome the phobia…but I haven’t come far yet.
I can’t watch shows with a wasp, hornet, killer bee or anything like that on it without getting the chills. I used to have horrible nightmares for the longest time about being chased by a swarm when i was little. I still cant even go outside to put the trash in the dumpster in hot weather without being anxious and overly aware of nests on the side of my house. Now that I live in Oklahoma, there are more wasps and stuff cause its more in the south. I love the summer…i really do but they ruin it and keep me from having fun many times every year!

What should I do??

Trophy of Grace replies…

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Immediately I would say you have to transform your mind and you’re your thinking with the Word of God. The Word of God can bring your mind healing. You can not be anxious and fearful. This is not what God intends for you. He wants to heal you. (Exodus 15:26)

“My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.” Proverbs 4:20-22

Our Lord does not want you to be tormented by fear all of your life. I understand that what you went through was traumatic. But our Lord wants you to let go of fear and start really trusting Him. You can overcome this by fighting the battle that is in your mind. You have to capture every rebellious, fearful thought that torments you and bring your thoughts back to the Word of God.

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9

If you want to overcome this you will need the Truth of God’s Word to shine the light on this situation. Then you can be set free. This means thinking about the Word of God in place of the fearful thoughts. In order to do this you have to know what the Word says about fear.

In 2 Timothy 1:7 we can see that fear can be a spirit. The spirit of fear serves to torment your mind by causing worry, anxiety, oppression, depression, insanity, confusion, and emotional issues.

Then there are other scriptures that serve to encourage us to not be fearful. I have included some below..

Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?

Isaiah 35:4 Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you.”

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Hebrews 13:6 So we can say with confidence, “The LORD is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”

Deuteronomy 31:6 So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

This is what you have to get into your mind. If you keep searching out the Scriptures that will help you fight this fear, you will be set free forever. You will see that when fear comes up against you the Spirit of the Lord will bring to your remembrance His Words to give you the courage you need to stand up against this.

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

It’s up to you to put this all into practice.

You are in our prayers..love you sister.

Sincerely,

Trophy of Grace
