Why Christianity, Isn’t It Just Another Religion?

christianity-copy2A lot of people ask, “Why Christianity? Isn’t it just another religion? Don’t all religions teach and/or lead to the same purpose?” Well, I am here to confidently and emphatically proclaim, “No!” Christianity is not a religion, but is rather a relationship with Jesus Christ, which through faith alone grants us direct access to the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). Religion is humans trying to work their way to God. Christianity is God coming to men and women through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Latin word from which the English word “religion” is derived means “to bind up.” Jesus did not come to bind us up in rules and regulations or rituals of devotion, but to set us free to be man as God intended. There is no other “religion” in the world that proclaims God Himself coming into the world and into our hearts, to live through us and be with us at all times. Karl Barth, one of the most influential theologians in history, once wrote, “The revelation of God is the abolition of religion.” Christianity in its very essence is about asking God to come into our lives and to change us; our means of salvation is not based on what we do, but what God did in the form of His Son Jesus in dying for our sins. Ephesians 2:8-9 states, “For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved, through faith; it is not the result of your own efforts, but God’s gift, so that no one can boast about it.” We only need to confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, and we are saved (Romans 10:9). The various religions of most Western Civilizations teach that man must adhere to a set of religious laws, and perform various works or merits in order to have an opportunity at salvation. Christianity teaches that our salvation is guaranteed, not because we deserve it, but because Christ died to pay our debt, and all we have to do is accept Jesus as our Savior to be washed clean and be forgiven of our sins (Psalms 51:2).

Religion is a form of rules and rituals with the thought of pleasing or appeasing an unapproachable god, and in some way through acts or actions earning his favor. Religion believes that “the best you can do is good enough.” Religion can’t seem to believe in a sovereign God who has already done all that is needed for the individual to be reconciled to Himself. God provides the power to meet the demands of His loving ways and blueprints for life that He guarantees will produce the fruits of righteousness, love, joy and peace (Galatians 5:22). Christianity is not a religion; it is a way of life. Christianity is not a set of rules to obey; it is a relationship to nourish. The very name identifies its followers as “Christ’s Ones.” Being a Christian is not about being accepted into a church; it is rather a conscious, life-changing decision to give up our old selfish lives where we were slaves to sin, and become a servant to the most high God. We choose by faith to be children of the Word and God (John 1:12), not children of the world and the Devil. With the power of His Holy Spirit, we can be different and make changes. True Christians are not better than anyone else, we are just forgiven, and we have a direct means to our salvation.

If you are mad at God or disappointed in your past church experience, perhaps it was because you weren’t exposed to true Christianity, but to a counterfeit “churchianity” which is prevailing in the modern world today. I would urge you to give God another chance with your life. Cast your past, your present and your future onto Him Who is willing and “able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy—“(Jude 1:24). If you do, one day you will joyfully shout with the redeemed of all history, “Worthy is the Lamb, Who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” (Revelations 5:12)
